🩺 IRCC Introduces Upfront Medical Exams for Express Entry

📅 What’s Changing?

Starting August 21, 2025, Canada requires all Express Entry applicants to complete their immigration medical exam before submitting their permanent residence application. This is a change from the previous process, where the exam was done only after IRCC instructions.

👤 Who Is Affected?

  • This new rule applies only to Express Entry cases submitted on or after the effective date.

  • Other immigration streams follow the existing process—medical exams are requested after application submission.

🇨🇦 Details for In-Canada Applicants

If you're already in Canada and had an immigration medical exam within the past five years, you can reuse your results. Just include your previous IME number in your application. This temporary policy remains in place until October 5, 2029.

📋 Practical Tips for Your Medical Exam

  • A panel physician approved by IRCC must perform the exam—your regular doctor cannot.

  • Bring your passport, glasses or contact lenses, medical reports, medication list, and vaccination records.

  • You’re responsible for exam costs, unless you're a refugee—then you may be exempt.
