End of Uncapped Immigration in Canada

Big Changes Ahead
Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced that Canada will soon end its uncapped temporary immigration program. This means fewer people will be able to come to Canada on temporary permits including study and work visas.

Numbers Speak 📉
In 2019, Canada issued over 500,000 new study and work permits. By the end of 2023, this number grew to over 1.6 million. To address this increase, the government plans to cap study permit applications at 606,250, reducing new permits by 40%.

Public Opinion Shifts 🗣️
A recent survey showed that 60% of Canadians believe there are too many immigrants coming to the country. In response, the government will introduce new limits on temporary immigration starting this September.

Economic Concerns đź’Ľ
Economists warn that reducing temporary immigration might harm Canada's economic growth. Temporary residents are a significant part of the workforce and economy. Cutting their numbers could slow down economic production and reduce job availability.

Looking Forward
With a federal election next year, immigration will be a pivotal issue. The government aims to reduce temporary residents to 5% of the population over the next three years, down from 6.2% last year.
