Canada to Reduce Low-Wage Temporary Foreign Workers 🛠️
Fewer Low-Wage Foreign Workers 🇨🇦
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will cut down on temporary foreign workers in low-wage jobs. This move aims to create more opportunities for Canadians and reduce reliance on foreign labour.
New Limits Starting September 26 📅
Starting September 26, regions with unemployment rates over 6% will see fewer approvals for foreign workers in low-wage jobs. Employers will also face stricter limits of 10% of their workforce for temporary foreign workers, down from 20%.
Protecting Workers and Jobs in Canada 🛡️
These changes aim to protect Canadian jobs and reduce the exploitation of foreign workers. Exceptions on restrictions will be made for the healthcare and construction sectors. The government encourages businesses to invest in Canadian workers and training, reducing reliance on temporary foreign labor.
Special Measures in Quebec ✅
Quebec is pausing applications for low-wage foreign workers in Montreal, aiming to protect local jobs and services. This pause targets jobs paying less than the province’s median wage. The move reflects concerns about the rising number of temporary workers affecting public services and housing.
