Canada Freezes Temporary Foreign Worker Low-Wage Program

Canada Faces Acute Shortages for Skilled Trades Workers

In this week’s issue,  Canada ranked seventh as the most advanced country globally, new biometrics app is launching for the Canadian Border Services Agency, and Canada faces acute shortages of skilled trades workers, particularly in construction and manufacturing.

Canada Suspends Temporary Foreign Worker Program For Low-Wage Jobs In Montreal

Six-Month Suspension Announced
Starting September 3rd, Canada will pause processing new applications for the Temporary Foreign Worker Program’s low-wage stream in Greater Montreal. This suspension will affect jobs offering wages below $27.47 per hour, Quebec’s median hourly wage. The move is intended to protect the integrity of the program and ensure Canadian workers are prioritized.

Government’s Focus 🎯
Federal Minister Randy Boissonnault emphasized that the pause is part of ongoing efforts to adjust to the changing labour market. The goal is to make sure employers use the TFWP only when no qualified Canadian workers are available.

Exemptions and Concerns 🛡️
Jobs in essential sectors like education, healthcare, and construction are exempt from the suspension. The Quebec CAQ government has expressed concerns over the high number of temporary foreign workers, emphasizing the need to protect public services and preserve the French language in Montreal. 🌍
