Canada Cracks Down on Employers Abusing Foreign Workers

Indians moving to Canada increases by 326% since 2013

In this week’s issue, the number of Indians moving to Canada increases by 326% since 2013, Ontario is making it easier for nurses and skilled trades’ workers to immigrate, and deadline extended for out-of-status construction workers in the Greater Toronto Area to apply for PR.

Canada Cracks Down on Employers Violating Temporary Foreign Worker Program Rules

💸Stricter Penalties for Non-Compliance
Canada's federal government is tightening the reins on employers who break the rules of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). In 2023, fines for non-compliant employers totaled $2.1 million, marking a 36% increase from the previous year.

📊 Importance of the TFWP in Canada
The TFWP is crucial for Canada's economy, allowing employers to hire foreign workers to fill labor shortages. Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) ensures the health and safety of these workers. In 2023, ESDC conducted 2,122 inspections, with 94% of employers found compliant, but 12 were banned, up from 7 in 2022.

💼 Investment in Protection Measures
A $48 million investment over two years aims to strengthen the Employer Compliance Regime. Measures include hiring more inspectors, maintaining a worker protection tip line, and conducting outreach sessions to raise awareness about worker rights and employer obligations. Enhanced tools will also help report misuse of the TFWP.

🛡️ Protecting Workers' Rights and Safety
Violations endangering worker safety, failing to pay appropriate wages, or causing abuse can result in fines and program bans. Canada remains committed to protecting temporary foreign workers and ensuring their rights and safety.
